Perhaps you are like me, I’m always forgetting to buy this or that, or to call the plumber, etc. So I came up with this fun chalkboard upcycled from an old cupboard drawer to hang in my kitchen .
We also have a “How to Video” of this in YouTube for you to watch;
- An old drawer
- Material or paper to line the drawer
- A piece of decorative moulding (I used a piece from an old chair)
- A piece of thin fibreboard the size of the drawer (to make the chalkboard)
- Spray paint (white, turquoise and matt black)
- Acrylic white paint and a white paint pen
- White wood glue, hot glue and masking tape
- Some hooks and a few small nails
- A piece of rope
- Drill with a large bit
- Saw (jigsaw)
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors, pencil, and chalk
- Sand paper
- An old brush
Clean the drawer.
1). Remove the handle and lightly sand the drawer.
2). Mask the drawer with the tape to paint the exterior.
3). Paint the outside of the drawer and the moulding with the turquoise spray paint.
4). Measure the inside of the drawer and cut the board to size. Make sure it fits easily.
5). Spray paint the board with matt black.
6). Mask off the drawer to paint the interior. Spray with white paint.
7). Lightly sand the outside of the painted drawer with sandpaper and then add some dry brush strokes with the white acrylic paint.
8). Measure and cut 2 strips of material or paper for the inside sides of the drawer. Stick them down with white wood glue.
9). With your PC, printout a decorative text for the chalkboard.
10). Using the chalk mark over the other side of the design.
11). Trace over the design with the pencil.
12). Now we have a shadow image of the text..
13). With the paint pen draw and fill in the design. Then stick the board to the inside of the drawer with the hot glue gun.
14). Drill 2 holes in the top of the drawer and lace through the rope, knotting the ends.
15). Replace the handle. I used a new more decorative one.
16). Attach the moulding to the inside of the drawer with a couple of nails. Then add the hooks.
You can use this idea on disused wine boxes or fruit boxes, etc.
So there you have it! A fun chalkboard ideal for the kitchen, kids room or workshop.
