I was born in London and immigrated to Spain in the early 80’s. From a very early age, I knew that I wanted to become an artist and I was lucky enough to be animated by my parents to be creative with my hands and use whatever came my way, paint, fabric, cardboard, it didn’t matter I always had the desire to create something new out of nothing…
In addition to my student years I have enjoyed a diverse career in the world of design. I take my inspiration from whatever captures my attention, I love mixing the useful with the artistic, and I like to look at each piece individually as if it could tell me just what it wants to be. It doesn’t matter whether it’s an old piece of furniture, fabrics forgotten by time or an obsolete object that was destined for the dustbin. Everything has soul, an inner light, and a story to tell, wood in particular inspires me, as you can see in my pieces where I use raw wood and bark in its natural state. As the daughter of a skilled carpenter I’ve always been lucky to have access to tools, materials, and the advice of a learned teacher.
During the few years that we lived in Mexico I learned to create my jewellery combining natural stones, and I was fortunate enough to able to absorb the style and colours of its local crafts. When we returned to Spain I was able with the constant help from my husband and other collaborators to translate my ideas into the realization of what is now “La Shenda Deco”.
The creation of something unique from nowhere is our major goal. The raw materials that we use are salvaged forgotten objects which are customized so they can shine again in the home, giving joy and style with their originality and attention to detail.
Everyone deserves a second chance, and we want to encourage environmental awareness by upcycling objects and retro furniture so they can be reborn into something new and daring. The destiny of an old object does not have to end up abandoned in the garage or dumped in the trash, we can revive those pieces into something new and exciting, a living memory of your own past.
We enjoy looking at obsolete objects with new eyes, imaging what they could be and finding a different use for what they were originally designed for. If your own personal style is classical, eclectic, or you’re a big fan of something special it really doesn’t matter, everything can be adapted to fit perfectly into your home.
